LiveScot Exhibition and Sale 2020

Scottish National Fatstock Club’s LiveScot Exhibition & Sale –

Saturday 28th November 2020

It was a different LiveScot event at Lanark this year, with no spectators and animals shown in pens, but it was a successful one nonetheless, with an excellent turn-out of livestock on display and a huge demand from purchasers at the post-show sale.

Scottish National Fatstock Club chairman, David McKerrow, said: “Despite the difficult circumstances, the cattle and sheep producers were eager to have an event to showcase and sell their livestock, and the butchers and sponsors were keen to support us, making it a tremendous success. Lawrie and Symington did a great job of accommodating us and by live streaming on social media, we allowed spectators to follow the day’s progress. We’re delighted with the quality of the stock on show and the success of the sale, which saw some first-time buyers at the event.”

Taking the overall title in the cattle, judged by Sam Carlisle of Border Meats, Lockerbie, was Mateus Rosie, a 608kg home-bred 20-month-old heifer from Wilson Peters, Monzie, Crieff. Winning the event for the fifth time in eight years, Mr Peters’ topper this time was a Limousin cross, sired by the Carlisle-bought bull, Carmon Lionbar, and out of a Limousin cross dam which is a full sister to his 2018 Aberdeen Christmas Classic champion, Cheeky Kiss.

At the sale following the show, Mateus Rosie went on to sell for the day’s top price of £10.86/kg or £6600, to B and T Kitson Butchers, Northallerton.

Reserve overall went to the reserve heifer, Red Hot Ruby, another Limousin cross, this time from Stirling-based Stewart and Lynsey Bett. Their 20-month-old heifer, weighing in at 702kg, was bought at last year’s Welsh Winter Fair from WP Hughes and Sons, Fferam, Uchaf. Sired by Derrygullinane Kingbull and out of a British Blue-sired dam, she later sold for 427p per kg or £3000, also to B and T Kitson.

Best of the steers was a 676kg pure Aberdeen-Angus from George McFadzean, Woodhead of Mailer, Perth. This home-bred two-year-old is by Glenbuchat Black Bruce and out of Cherrybank Patsy Annie. John Scott Meats, Paisley, bought that one for 253p per kg or £1710.

Reserve overall steer was Diplo, a 622kg home-bred Limousin cross from Stewart Dunlop, Holehouse, Ochiltree. Sired by Brutus Hashtag, that one later sold for 260p per kg or £1617, to Fleming Butchers, Arbroath.

Continuing his winning streak, Wilson Peters also picked up the Housewives’ Choice champion ticket, with Coilavoulin Elle, an April 2019-born Limousin cross heifer by Naby Director. Bought at UA Stirling’s sale in April from Willie Stevenson, Coilavoulin, Pitlochry, he was knocked down at 748p per kg or £4100, to Law-based butcher Jimmy Cairns, a regular buyer at Lanark, who said he was impressed with her conformation and shape, adding:

“I try to buy the best in the market 52 weeks of the year, aiming for quality of product and quality of service across the board. The standard of cattle was very high throughout the show. Butchers have been very well supported this year but it’s paramount that we keep our product standard up – all our meat products are made on premises, we don’t take any shortcuts.”

These points were echoed by local butcher Hugh Black, who bought several cattle at the sale, he said: “From a butcher’s point of view, the cattle were very well finished at handier sizes. Butchers have been well supported this year and we’re happy to support local farmers who are producing top quality beef.”

The standard remained high in the sheep lines, where local prime lamb buyer Robert Lawson had the task of selecting the winners. He opted for a pair of 92kg Beltex cross lambs from John Guthrie, Cuiltburn, Crieff, ensuring a first live championship for this regular exhibitor, who has previously won the carcase competition twice. Mr Guthrie’s home-bred lambs, from his 350-ewe flock, went on to sell for £350 per head, to David Comrie and Son Butchers, Crieff.

In a double victory, the reserve overall lambs came from the same home. These were 84kg Beltex crosses, which reached £310 per head, selling to first time buyer at the event, Mathieson Butchers, Edinburgh, who also took home the butcher’s champion in the cattle, a 602kg heifer from Gavin Scott, Gateside, Linlithgow, which made 664p per kg, or £4000.

Overall hill champions were the winning Blackfaces, a pair from the Firm of Shawhead, Newmains Home Farm, Douglas, weighing a combined 78kg. They went on to reach £136 per head to John Scott Meats, Paisley. Reserve hill pair were North Country Cheviots from Bruce Lang, Uplands, Cupar, weighing a total 107kg. They sold at 280p per kg or £150 per head, to the judge.
